FISHING

Yellowknife is perched on the shore of one of the largest and deepest lakes in the world – a lake renowned for its trophy-sized lake trout and great northern pike.

But that’s not all.  Dozens of smaller lakes accessible from Yellowknife also offer excellent fishing and Yellowknife is the starting point for many fly-in fishing lodges, usually the only lodge on a lake at least 10 miles long.

Sport fishing in the Northwest Territories is governed by the Northwest Territories Sport Fishing Regulations, and requires a valid fishing license.

Staff at the Yellowknife Visitor Information Centre can provide locations for the purchase of  sport fishing licenses.

The main fish species in the Yellowknife area are:  Lake Trout, Northern Pike, Walleye (Pickerel) Lake Whitefish and Arctic Grayling.  Inconnu are also found in Great Slave Lake, but not the smaller lakes.

You can venture out on your own and drop a line in a nearby lake, or you can hire a fishing guide who can quickly take you to the places where monsters lurk.
